Nineteen-year-old multi-platinum singer/songwriter DAYA is back with new music with the emotionally poignant song "Safe" which is available everywhere now at Interscope Records.
Daya and co-writers Laleh and Joel Little (who both produced the track) penned the song the day after the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas last fall, channeling their sense of grief and processing into a track that harkens back to a nostalgic time when the world seemed more innocent.
On the lyrics and inspiration behind the track, Daya reflects: "'Safe' was written the day after the Vegas shooting. I felt powerless and lost trying to come to terms with the senselessness of it. The song draws on the feelings of safety / invincibility that I experienced during my early childhood, where the only big horror stories were well-crafted movies or books of fiction. But there are always antagonists in society trying to build their own real-life horror stories, and now these stories increasingly seem to be happening in traditionally safe spaces like schools and festivals. We're being forced to confront - at younger and younger ages - the proximity of evil and how easily it could affect us or someone we love. The song explores that childhood illusion of safety and how I wish I could wrap a blanket of safety around myself and the people I love."
The lyric video for "Safe" is composed entirely of VHS footage to create various video backgrounds and textures. A full music video for the song is coming soon.
"Safe" is Daya's first new song since the release of "New" in October 2017 after signing with Interscope Records last summer. Her vocals were most recently featured on R.L. Grime's single "I Wanna Know." Next up, Daya can be seen live with a special performance at the Special Olympics, and stops at Lollapalooza and the Billboard Hot 100 Festival.
