Every since it was announced that Billy Porter would be taking a turn as Cinderella’s fairy godmother in the upcoming Sony adaptation of the classic tale, we’ve been itching to hear more.

We know that the musical film is based on an idea from James Corden and is written and directed by Pitch Perfect’s Kay Cannon. Former Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello is playing Cinderella herself, with Idina Menzel taking on the role of the wicked stepmother.

But not much has been known about the roles themselves, or how this adaptation will set itself apart from previous versions — something we’re sure it will do.

Fortunately, Porter spoke a little bit about the film in a recent interview with CBS News, touching on some important aspects of his fairy godmother for modern times.

“They call it the ‘Fab G,’” he says of his character. “Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless. At least that’s how I’m playing it. And it’s really powerful.”

This Cinderella is a classic fairytale for a new generation. To be able to play this genderless, fabulous fairy godmother - what a gift. Thank you @CBSNews for sitting down with me and catching up about the role

Porter, who has recently faced backlash after it was announced he’s slated to appear on an upcoming episode of Sesame Street, thinks this is a take on the role that children need to see. More than that, it’s something they’re ready to see.

“You know, this is a classic fairy tale for a new generation, and I think that the new generation is really ready. You know, the kids are ready,” he said. “It’s the grown ups that are slowing stuff down.”

Cinderella is currently set for theatrical release on February 5, 2021. So we’ll have to wait a long time to see Porter in this magical, genderless role, but we have a feeling it will be worth it.
