Descovy wins over FDA panel for new PrEP drug

In an exciting move by the American Food and Drug Administration, a new form of PrEP has been approved in panel and could soon become readily available as the second drug used as a pre-exposure prophylactic preventative measure against the spread of HIV/AIDS. Descovy might become the wonder drug that gets more people on PrEP.

Previous complaints about Truvada, the drug used in PrEP, included reports of bone density depletion and kidney issues found in a very, very small number of used taking the anti-retroviral medicine. Descovy, Gilead’s newly approved PrEP tool, is Truvada evolved. A combination of the drugs emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamideis reportedly less toxic and much smaller than Truvada.

Truvada and the use of PrEP has been a revolutionary step in the war against HIV and AIDS. Not only are AIDS and HIV patients living longer, healthier lives than their negative counterparts, but variations of these medicines are becoming more rapidly available for everyone to use as a preventative measure. Introducing: Descovy, the newly reimagined, better for your body version of Truvada.

While the United States Food and Drug Administration has yet to give their final seal of approval and make Descovy the official second PrEP drug, the administration does often follow the advice of the recent panel that just voted in favor of its advancement 16-2. Gilead, the manufacturer of both medicines, has already promised a generic version of Truvada to hit the markets in the fall of 2020.

While the AIDS virus used to be a dark cloud of death lingering over the gay community, these advancements in modern medicine have also helped fighting the stigma of having the disease and getting tested for STIs. Gay men are appearing more likely and willing to get tested for sexually transmitted illnesses knowing that a HIV diagnosis in 2019 is not the end of the world.

Always remember to practice safe sex and that includes the use of a condom during intercourse. PrEP is just a further protection against contracting HIV. While injectable PrEP treatments aren’t far down the road, fortunately, there should soon be another new anti-HIV drug on the block. And its name is Descovy.
