Bishop defends pregnant moms liking anal sex makes kids gay comment

Morphou bishop Neophytos said pregnant women who enjoy anal sex make their kids gay

A bishop has defended his remark that pregnant mothers enjoying anal sex transfers to the baby and makes them gay.

Last week, Morphou bishop Neophytos made international headlines with his controversial comments.

‘Homosexuality is usually a problem transferred to a foetus, when a pregnant woman has anal sex and enjoys it,’ he said. ‘It happens during the parent’s intercourse or pregnancy. It follows an abnormal sexual act between the parents. To be more clear, anal sex.

‘[Saint Porphyrios] says that when the woman likes that, a desire is born, and then the desire is passed on to the child,’ he said.

And he’s not backing down on his beliefs anytime soon.

According to the Cyrpus Mail, he responded to the backlash: ‘I expressed the position of the Church and the position of the saints.’

He then urged people to go to the Morphou church’s website to listen to his full speech.

LGBTI rights in Cyprus

In a list of 49 European countries ranked for LGBTI rights, Cyprus comes in at number 33.

Although the country legalized same-sex sexual activity, equal age of consent and numerous anti-discrimination laws, Cyprus falls behind when it comes to LGBTI parental rights.

Same-sex marriage is illegal, alongside stepchild and joint adoption by same-sex couples, access to IVF for lesbians and commercial surrogacy for gay couples.

Cyprus made civil partnerships legal in December 2015, but the Orthodox Church in Cyprus heavily opposed the bill.

39 lawmakers voted in favor of the Civil Partnerships Bill while only 12 voted against it and three abstained.

ILGA-Europe executive director Evelyne Paradis said it was right for gay and lesbian Cypriots to expect the same rights as everyone else.

She said at the time: ‘Same-sex couples and their families are just as deserving of protection as their heterosexual friends and neighbours.

‘This is not about giving one group “special rights” but about recognizing the wonderful diversity of families that live in Europe.’
