All the best of friends know what to do when their pals are having a tough time, and Lance Bass is no exception.

The early ‘00s pop star made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen earlier this week and talked about that time he came out to Britney Spears.

Lance came out publicly in 2006, but Brit heard the news two years earlier, on the night of her Vegas wedding to Jason Alexander.

“It was the night that she got married the first time in Vegas…to Jason,” the *NSYNCer told Cohen. “So I went up to Vegas to kind of see the craziness that was happening. And she was a little upset once she realized what she had done because, you know, it was a funny thing.”

(The wedding was a joke that wound up not being so funny, according to reports at the time.)

“And then she started, like, really crying and, like, she was so upset. And so I took her to her room and we were sitting on her bed and she wouldn’t stop crying, so I was like, ‘I’m gay,’” Lance continued, shrugging. “And it made her stop crying.”

When Cohen asked if Britney was supportive, Lance confirmed that she was: “She chuckled.”

Britney’s marriage was annulled 55 hours after their whirlwind mistake, and Lance came out publicly on the cover of People magazine two and a half years later, and was eventually even able to get married himself! But kind of fantastic to learn these little details of the craziest nights of pop stars lives so many years later.

Everyone who gets married in Vegas and immediately realizes it was a terrible mistake should have a friend like Lance Bass!
