Economic Minister refuses to take polygraph over gay sex tape

Malaysia’s Minister for Economic Affairs has refused to take a polygraph test to prove he is not in a gay sex tape.

Minister Azmin Ali, 54, won’t take a lie detector test because he has followed legal proceedings to prove his innocence.

The video went viral earlier this month in Malaysis. 27-year-old Haziq Azi claiming he and Azmin were the two men having sex in the video. Azi is a member of rival political party People’s Justice Party (PKR).

Gay sex is illegal in Malaysia which has seen increasing persecution on LGBTI in the past year. Courts convicted PKR’s president and former Malaysian deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, twice on sodomy charges. He served a total of 14 years in prison on sodomy convictions.

The controversy has embroiled Malaysia with authorities investigating the authenticity of the video.

But Azmin maintained his innocence.

‘This is clearly a political ploy. I have taken several steps based on my lawyer’s advice by lodging a qazaf report followed by a police report,’ he told media on Monday (24 June).

‘I also have given my full cooperation to the authorities, unlike those who want to simply determine the outcome of the investigations, its results and the next course of action.’

Malaysia’s prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, defended Azmin saying ‘he is not so stupid’ to have made a gay sex tape.

‘I don’t think he is so stupid as to do that and get caught in a picture (videos) like that,’ he said on Monday.

‘I think somebody is out to bring him down.’
